Top 5 Best Free No Code Game Engines Ever

We have all played games in one way or the other, in different platforms, and devices. We also must have downloaded a game or so from one App Store, or more. And maybe at some point, we may have gotten an idea to create a game or games. Well, the good news is that, you can create a game all by yourself. Games are usually created by a team or group of people. But there are tools that can help you to create games on your own. This is where indie or solo game development comes in. In this type of industry, you are a game developer, developing almost everything, or everything, from the sounds, music, arts, and programming. Though this days, life is easier, you get to purchase, or use already made assets.

In this Post today, we will take a look at some game engines which do not require you, knowing how to code, and I will give you my “Overall Best", which is a free, open source, no code game engine, I use a lot, and the only game engine, in my Personal Computer right now. There are other game engines I have used before, but, I may not be able to remember them, or I was not able to add them in my list, or the mean nothing to be in my list.

Table of Contents:

  1. Game salad
  2. Appypie
  3. QuickAppninja
  4. Sketchware
  5. Gdevelop

1. Game Salad

Game Salad is a game engine, and definitely not the first game engine I have ever used.

Game Salad was launched in 2010, and since then, have gotten millions of coming up Game Developers. With Game salad, you can create a 2d game from scratch and publish your game to different devices, which includes Android and the Web.

Also you can export your game to any device known to man, as they said. I have no idea about this, because, I haven’t touch this aspect.

My Experience

Game salad offers free trial, and when the time is up, you need to purchase a plan to continue to use it. During the free trial, I didn't create any game with it, because, I didn’t even know where to start, and not to talk of publishing or exporting the game. When you create a game during the free trial, you can export it, but there will be a splash screen, and you cannot use it commercially, you will need a subscription for commercial usage or distribution.

2. Appypie

If you want to build your app as fast as possible, then you should use Appypie. It is stated in there website that you can build an Android and iOS app within five minutes. But is it even possible? Well it may be, if you know where all the tools you’re looking for are. All the components needed are already made for you, all you need to do is to Put your game or app name, and some other details, basically, it is an interview, and your app will be ready.

Appypie is another no code IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to build your games and apps, and it works directly in your browser.

My Experience

Well, five minutes didn’t work for me, I can’t remember me creating a game in this platform, but it is very possible to create a game or an app with Appypie.

Pricing

The pricing plan were clear, but some other added elements in the pricing plan made there pricing plan “INONCLUSIVE”

3. QuickAppNinja

QuickAppNinja is another tool that helps you create a game, even directly in your browser. This is a very powerful tool, and it is focused only on games. With this game engine, you can create trivia games like: 4 Images, Guess the Picture, Guess the Hidden Picture, Find Words, Chat Story, in your browser, all you need are some information, and setting up of your app, and you’re done.

My Experience

I loved the interface of QuickAppNinja, and it was user/ developer friendly, I was not able to export a game, because I didn’t finish some setups, and since then, I haven’t used it again.

4. Sketchware

Sketchware is a block programming similar to MIT Scratch. It has a drag and drop visual development interface. In this app, you can create games, or apps, directly inside of your Android device.

This app runs offline, but when integrating something like the Google map API key, or Admob, and other integrations, you need some internet connection. Compiling your app for testing is totally offline.

In this app, you can export your app with a release key, that will make your app/game playable and shareable on many devices, but you will need internet connection here. You can use another method to export your game offline, with another app that has a registered release key, and from here, you can share and play your game anywhere on an android device.

My Experience

Sketchware is a really powerful tool. I was still able to create some games with it (Download: Hangman; Hidden Words; Earth Miner), and they are fully functioning. The only downside is, when you have a smaller screen resolution, the app, or game may be, or would be oversized.

5. Gdevelop (Overall Best)

Gdevelop is a free, and open source, no code game development engine. Gdevelop was built with JavaScript, which means, this is one of those HTML game engines out there.

Gdevelop game engine is an awesome engine to use for creating games. If you are a developer, or you want to use code to create your game, the good news is that you can, Gdevelop has both drag and drop and coding features. You get to code your game in JavaScript, and add complex feature in your game. Gdevelop has a Physics engine, which means, you can simulate realistic falling, and other stuffs in 2D and 3D.

Gdevelop is used by lots of people, individuals, even companies, and businesses, for creating and publishing games. Gdevelop game engine is also used for educational purposes, to teach students in some schools.

My Experience

I have been using Gdevelop for some years, and, it is the only game on my computer, and probably, you are going to hear a lot about it in this blog, from creating projects, to maybe anything related.

I was looking for a free 3D game engine, and then, I found Gdevelop. Gdevelop at this time wasn’t 3D, but I later loved the 2D and continue to use it, and now, Gdevelop does 3D, though, I still can’t do 3D molding, or even draw 2D assets, but then, how do I create my games?

Well, this would be in another post, but, am picking up trying to draw, and combine colors.

Pricing

Note: You can Use Gdevelop to create a game and publish it to Google play or App store without a dime, but for best experiences, you will need a “Subscription”

Conclusion

I have used so many game engines for the past four years, so many that I can’t even remember their names, but thank Goodness I found just the right engine and the only engine existing in my computer system right now.

Game development is no easy task, but with great patients, we will defiantly succeed in doing what we have set our minds to do.

Today, I have just only mentioned fraction of game engines that exist, and the ones I have used, I may have not mentioned the big ones like Unity, Unreal and so on, but that’s because I haven’t used them. I will create a post to review them, and get as much information as I can, so that you can go ahead and have a look at those engines, or choose the one that is Best for you.
